Educational Philosophy

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is about relationships, exploration, and responsibility. I believe that these three topics are important aspects to bring into my classroom because I want my students to wake up in the morning and want to come into my classroom.

I believe that my classroom should be able to form relationships with one another. By greeting the students in the morning and the evening when they leave school. I would start my day by saying good morning and end my days with a goodbye or have a wonderful day. I believe that this could change a child’s mood or motivation for the day. It is starting with a positive note and ending with a positive note. I would also do little things during the day such as saying praising words during their assignments and telling them to have a good recess. By forming these relationships with my students I want them to be able to trust me if they have questions about school, or if they are having troubles at home. I want my student to be comfortable enough with me that they can talk to me about anything they want.

I also believe that exploration is important in a classroom. I want to work around the outcomes and indicators of the Saskatchewan curriculum to be able to teach in a way my students will enjoy. Such as bringing in items for my students to play with or explore for my lessons, such as, glow sticks for a science lesson, fur mitts for a social lesson, mixing paint colours for an art lesson. I feel students learn best by their experiences and by bringing items in for students to explore on their own engages them into the lesson. It also allows them to make a connection to my lesson to better understand what they are learning. I believe students learn best by making connections with items or their personal lives. I love when students get excited about an item that I bring into the classroom, it shows me that they are engaged in the lesson.

Lastly, I believe it is important for my students to develop responsibility in the classroom. To initiate responsibility in my classroom, I would set up a chore board.  With a chore board, I can have someone sweep the floor, put chairs away, clean the tables, and tidy up the classroom. Each week I would have different children doing different jobs for the week. With this in place, I would be teaching them responsibility and respect for their classroom. With this responsibility, it would also be teaching them life skills. This skill would also come into place when they are coming to class on time, and being prepared to start whatever we are working on that day. To make sure my students keep up with their responsibilities I would set up a prize jar as well so I could encourage them to do more and for them to discover more on their own.

Relationships, exploration, and responsibility all make up the importance of my teaching philosophy. I will pursue these things in my classroom in order to make it a healthier and happier place for my students to come into.
